Cumbiambera Chechies

Ummm… Can this kid get any cuter? Ok, I’m a little biased… just a little. I cannot believe how big my beautiful princess is getting. 3. My baby will be 3 this year. And then, she’ll no longer be my “baby” – but my “big girl”.

One of the things she’s always loved to do is play “dress up”. Whether its putting on my tank tops and pretending it’s a dress or putting on an actual Chech sized dress and wandering around the house asking if we’d like to come over to her castle for vegetables. So when Javy’s Abuela in Barranquilla sent us a Cumbiambera dress – I was SO excited for her to wear it. She had it made JUST for her, and sent all of the beautiful accessories to make the outfit complete.

Barranquilla, Colombia, where Javy’s family is from, hosts the second largest Carnaval Celebration in the World – second to only the Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro. Think, Mardi Gras, except on every inch of the city not just a few streets – and for 24 hours, 7 days a week for a few weeks. There’s Pre-Carnaval, Carnaval and Post Carnaval… needless to say it’s a giant party that I’d LOVE to see with my own eyes one day. One day when I’m not a Mom to a toddler – which won’t be for a few years at this point… Regardless, a Cumbiambera is a woman that dances to Cumbia, a traditional style of dance that’s found all over Barranquilla during Carnaval.
