That’s right – you’ve read those words correctly. We withdrew Alexandria from Broward County Public Schools OFFICIALLY and we are homeschooling this sweet little sassafrasses until further notice.
Instead of a long-winded explanation about ‘why’ let me get a few questions answered right here:
- No, I am not going to lock her in a closet and shelter her from the rest of the world. Not sure if you’ve ever met Alexandria in person, but we really don’t have a hard time meeting new people or enjoying new experiences. We are SO lucky that Alex is naturally pretty easy going and this was one of the deciding factors of pulling her this year.
- Yes, she is still going to stay on track with “regular” school requirements. We’ll be tracking her progress, pushing her through challenging curriculum and keeping her engaged with the world through a few different drop-off programs.
- I still want to be your friend, even if your kid goes to “regular” school. THIS one is the hardest one to deal with – I don’t think I’m “better than you” and I don’t think your family isn’t “good enough” because we’ve decided this route is best for us right now. I’ve been fielding some odd comments from people and just don’t understand how people can be so judgmental about something they know nothing about. I still want to be everyones friend – unless of course you’re one of “those” people and yes this song is about you.
Now that THATS out of the way…
OHMYGOD YOU GUYS WE’RE GOING TO HOMESCHOOL!!!!
I’m terrified and INCREDIBLY excited all at the same time. It’s obviously not going to be any easy task – I’m already starting to get a little overwhelmed but I know that’s part of the process. We’ve got our curriculum mostly pieced together and our playroom all set up and ready to go!
Mama also got herself a little workplace and FINALLY have somewhere to store all the stuff lyin around!
One of the things I was most excited about with setting up this room was getting a place to put all their dress up toys – wigs, dresses, musical instruments, the works! They LOVE using their imaginations to play and dream up stories so I was so happy to give them a little nook to grab their dress up fun at their leisure and a pretty cool mirror to make sure everything is in it’s perfect place 😉
This is Alex’s workstation – books, arts & crafts supplies and puzzles she can reach whenever she likes.
This is Mimi’s station – blocks with letters, her Little Passports activity luggage and her puzzles on the bottom there! You’ll also see the book bin in the bottom corner of this photo – that’s where the free books go for them to grab whenever they wanna cuddle up on the reading corner.
I’m not gonna lie, I wanna lay in this reading corner all the time. Something about those Floorbloom pillows make it soooooo comfy! Also if you head over to that website you might recognize the girls on the front page 😉
Our first day was pretty productive – quick reading & language lesson in the morning!
Followed by a fun day with some new homeschool friends at the park to watch the 2017 Eclipse!
We’re overall pretty excited to get this year started – and for all the fun new experiences we’ll be diving into… looking forward to sharing our journey and learning from you other amazing homeschool families along the way!
