The month of October has been a bit of a doozie for us here! Getting into a new schedule has been a challenge and we’ve worked a bit more hours than usual so we’re late to get into the Pumpkin theme – but better late than never. This week we started on the Tara West, FirstieLiteracy Units Bundle starting with From Seed to Pumpkin, by Wendy Pfeffer – learning about Pumpkin Life Cycles!
First we read the book together, pointing out the different stages and discussing why the pumpkin responded the way it did to the different seasons.
I printed out the different stages on some yardstick, laminated them and took a few minutes and drew out the Life Cycle of the Pumpkin on our sidewalk.
Papi was home early enough to play with us – so he makes a cameo in some of these photos working & chatting with us in the background.
We talked about the stages of the life cycle again, and both Mimi & Alex matched up the cards to the illustrated life cycles on the pavement!
Last year, we let our pumpkin decompose in our front garden area – it took a while for it to completely melt and for the seeds to dry out enough to sprout. But – now we have this giant Pumpkin Vine, and we’ve even got some flower buds! I’m hoping it cools down enough for the flowers to bloom and open!
Alex decided our plant was somewhere between the “vine” and the “flower” stage. 🙂
Next, we parked at the table and started documenting the life cycle in these sweet Pumpkin Books I picked up in the Target Dollar spot!
Mimi said she needed a break – and decided to sprawl out in the front yard for a few minutes. Also, yep, that’s still Hurricane Debris.
I was really impressed with Milena’s pumpkin drawing!! Look at those cute little green leaves around the pumpkin! haha
Break #2 – drawing is hard.
Once they were done, we hopped from stage to stage, identifying where we drew it in our book!
Tomorrow, we carve our pumpkins and dry out the seeds!
Happy Learnin’ y’all.
